Ramon Mongo Santamaria is undoubtedly one of the most respected percussionists and a pioneer of modern Latin Jazz. His career began in the 1950s with his group, the Black Cuban Diamonds. He recorded dozens of legendary percussion albums. Worldwide hits like "Watermelon Man" in 1963 and the album "Summertime" in 1980 are just two successes among all the recordings of this percussion master. Mongo inspired more percussionists than any other conga player in the world. He sadly passed away in February 2003, at the age of 85.
